Feminist Theater was an alternative theater that began in the early 1970s. These theaters at first focused on speaking directly to the local community of urban areas. They spoke about women's subordinate position in the dominant culture and the changes that could be made. With a more left political group, organizations, such as the National Organization for Women (NOW), fought to show how the social and political differences between men and women at the time needed to be changed so that women and men are treated as equals. Feminist theaters such as the Living Theater, the Open Theater, and the Performance group disrupted the hierarchy of theaters at that time. They also challenged the content they were showing by performing shows from a women's perspective. As the years went on the women playwrights were recognized for their talent and were awarded. This helped women playwrights, directors, producers, designers, and actors appear more and more. They were given positions that no women has held before on Broadway or the U.S.. As women plays became more and more mainstream they returned to more traditional styles while still giving it feminist features. Groups like the Spiderwomen theater and At the Foot of the Mountain Theater presented the growing ethnic feminist awareness withing the U.S. Feminist theater has come a long way since its inception and is still growing to this day.
I believe that Trifles is in fact a feminist play. I believe this because the story shows the injustice that women received back then. While the Court Attorney is out looking for evidence the women in the play are then given a choice to hand in the evidence or hide it from the Attorney and Sheriff so that Minnie gets a more fair trial. The play focuses around how the rules of society then were completely against women so the women had to fight it in order to help out a fellow woman. Because this is the main theme throughout the play, I still believe that Trifles is in fact a feminist play.
